Ginger Blue Hawaiian

by Effy A

A creamy ginger Blue Hawaiian to close off the last weekend of Pride month! The traditional recipe calls for ice blended with the cocktail ingredients. However, I wanted to make this ginger-flavored and the ginger didn’t actually mesh with the ice. So I didn’t blend this with ice and opted for frozen pineapple instead for a smoother drink. This cocktail is not to be confused with the Blue Hawaii. A Blue Hawaii usually isn’t made with coconut cream, has a lighter consistency and doesn’t need to be blended. Not to mention, it actually has two types of liquor-rum and vodka- and uses sweet-and-sour-mix as a syrup base. A Blue Hawaiian is much simpler than this so no worries!

For this Blue Hawaiian cocktail recipe, you will need coconut cream. Coconut cream is a thicker, fattier version of coconut milk. So whereas coconut milk is liquid, coconut cream has the consistency of plain yogurt. If you can’t find a can of coconut cream at the grocery store, simply freeze a can of coconut milk and the thick part on top is the coconut cream.

This drink is best served in a Hurricane glass for aesthetic purposes but any tall glass will do. You will also need a high-speed blender since you will be crushing frozen pineapple. I like to freeze fresh pineapple in a Ziploc bag and freeze it overnight to get it frozen. Just in any lovely cocktail, use freshly squeezed lime juice for a fresher taste. Garnish your Blue Hawaiian with maraschino cherries and serve over ice cubes.

Notes

Please do not substitute coconut cream with coconut milk-they aren't the same texture so you will get a different feel to the drink. However, it will taste similar.
