Basa fish taquitos with hot honey

When I made these fish taquitos, that was the first time I ate basa fish (not to be confused with bass fish). These were really awesome in these cheesy fish taquitos. For those who don’t know, taquitos are like fried, rolled-up tortillas filled with cheese, meat, veggies or a combination of all three. I think this tastes even better than a taco and is as good as a quesadilla.

I used fish fillets for this recipe but you can use any other skinless fish. Bass, haddock, sole or salmon are good examples. I simply seasoned the fish with hot honey and salt because hot honey is kind of spicy on its own. If you want this extra spicy you can add in a pinch of black pepper or cayenne pepper. Cheddar and Pepper Jack are popular cheeses in taquito recipes.

I didn’t use toothpicks to hold the tortillas in place and it really showed. Therefore, I highly recommend using toothpicks for this recipe so that your tortillas don’t fall apart on you midway throughout frying.

I garnished these cheesy fish taquitos with chopped cilantro and served this with extra hot honey sauce. Another awesome option would be my avocado coconut dipping sauce. It was literally so perfect and I hope you guys enjoy this finger food as much as I do.

Hot honey Basa fish taquitos

Ingredients

0.3kg/0.6 lbs Basa fish fillets (or haddock/sole/salmon)

1/2 teaspoon table salt

1/4 cup hot honey sauce, plus extra to serve

2 tablespoons cooking oil to cook fish

4 medium tortillas

2 cups grated cheese

2 cups cooking oil to fry taquitos

Instructions

  1. Season fish with the salt and hot honey sauce.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry on medium-high heat for 5 minutes on each side. The sauce will start to bubble around the fish and turn off the heat.
  3. Shred apart the fish with 2 forks.
  4. Heat the 2 cups of oil in a separate large skillet/frying pan (I used my cast-iron skillet).
  5. Place a tortilla on a flat, dry surface and place about 2 tablespoons of cooked fish and grated cheese in the lower center of the tortilla, leaving about 1 inch of space on the sides of the tortilla.
  6. Roll the tortilla tightly into a cylinder shape, leaving the ends open and use a toothpick to hold it in place. Repeat steps 5&6 for the remaining tortillas.
  7. Fry these rolled tortillas in the hot oil for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  8. Serve warm with extra hot honey sauce, sour cream or my homemade avocado sauce.
