How to make the best Cuban sandwich

by Effy A

A Cuban sandwich is the crème de la crème of all sandwiches in my opinion. Imagine layers of juicy cooked pork, Swiss cheese, ham, and pickles. It also comes with a delicious mayonnaise Dijon spread which doubles as a dipping sauce. This is great for any special occasion. If you made a big serving of roast pork or pulled pork, make these sandwiches. I was very pleased when I made these the first time two years ago and I’ve been a fan since.

The most commonly used pork in a Cuban sandwich is pork loin. However as mentioned, you can substitute it with pulled pork, which is even juicier in my opinion. My bourbon and maple pulled pork recipe would go really well in this sandwich. You also need some really good bread. Hawaiian rolls would be great as well as Brioche or Italian bread loaves.

The Cuban sandwich is basically cooked like a grilled cheese. You need a good large frying pan/skillet and something heavy to press down on the sandwiches. You can use bricks or a cast-iron skillet to act as a weight. This glues the layers in the sandwich really well together. This is how I layered my Cuban sandwich:

  • Bread
  • Mayo-Dijon spread
  • Swiss cheese
  • Sliced Dill pickles
  • Cooked pork
  • More swish cheese
  • Bread

Ingredients

1/4 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup mustard

Pinch of cayenne pepper

1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped

1 tablespoon lime or lemon juice

1 bread loaf, cut in half lengthwise

8 slices Swiss cheese

6-8 slices cooked ham

2 cups cooked pull pork

4-6 sliced Dill pickles

2 tablespoons butter

Heavy object- 1 brick or a cast-iron skillet

Instructions

  1. Mix the mayonnaise with the cayenne pepper, mustard and herbs.
  2. Spread the mayonnaise mix from step 1 on the open face sides of the bread loaf. Don't throw away the leftover sauce, keep it refrigerated until needed later.
  3. Take one bread half and place half  the amount of Swiss cheese evenly on top, followed by the ham, pickles and pork. Top this all up with the remaining Swiss cheese.
  4. Place the remaining bread half on top to form a sandwich.
  5. Melt the butter in a heated frying pan and place the sandwich on it. Wear oven mitts and wrap the sandwich with foil. Place the heavy object on top and cook on medium-high heat until all the cheese has melted.
  6. Cut into 3-4 portions and serve with the leftover mayonnaise mix from step 1.
