Homemade black chai iced tea

by Effy A

Iced tea is great but this homemade black chai iced tea is even better. It also has hints of cinnamon and ginger thanks to the chai tea. Making your own iced tea always tastes super fresh and refreshing. Steeping the tea bags for as long as possible is what makes it so tasty. There are so many health benefits of chai tea so this along with the lemon is quite healthy.

Chai means “tea” in Hindi and authentic chai usually has cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, black peppercorns and other spices. It is known for its sweet and spicy taste as well as its lovely aroma. Chai is commonly mixed with black tea so I don’t think this will be hard to find at the grocery store. Studies have linked chai to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and helping regulate blood sugar. So this is a really nutrient-rich tea.

I used both honey and white (granulated) sugar as my choice of sweetener for this black chai iced tea. But you can also use simple syrup. In fact, you can make this an interesting flavored iced tea by using fruit-flavored syrups like my strawberry syrup or grenadine syrup, which is pomegranate flavored. You can make so many variations of this by using different flavored syrups. You can also add some lemon juice (about 1/4 cup) to turn this into lemon iced tea.

Ingredients

6 cups boiling hot water

12 black chai tea bags

4 cinnamon sticks

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons honey

Tray of ice cubes

Mint sprigs to garnish

Lemon wedges to garnish

Instructions

  1. I boiled the hot water on the stove but you can use a kettle if you have one.
  2. Transfer the hot water to a 2L capacity jug or pitcher. Place the tea bags in the hot water, making sure the strings fall outside the container. This makes it easier to remove from the water afterwards. Add the cinnamon sticks.
  3. Tightly wrap the container with foil and leave to steep (soak) for at least 2 hours.
  4. Take out the cinnamon sticks and the tea bags. Add the sugar and honey, stirring until it dissolves.
  5. Refrigerate this for 1 hour. This is your iced tea.
  6. Add ice cubes in tall glasses and pour the iced tea over it. Garnish with mint and lemon.

Notes

You can also add some lemon juice (about 1/4 cup) to turn this into lemon iced tea.
