Review: trying Basque cheesecake for the first time

by Effy A

I have seen this cheesecake recipe posted so many times on my feed and I was craving it so bad. This is a review for a matcha Basque cheesecake that I ordered from a local coffee shop. Basque cheesecakes have a smoky “burnt” top that cracks when you slice into it. However, below this stiff exterior, lies a traditionally creamy cheesecake texture. This was a very cool combination because matcha already as that smoky, bittersweet touch so it paired really well in this Basque cheesecake.

Origins of the Basque cheesecake

Apparently the Basque cheesecake originated in a Spanish café by Santiago Rivera who worked tirelessly to perfect this recipe. What makes this cheesecake unique is that it has no crust at all, and it is baked at a high temperature which gives that burnt top and smooth filling. It has taken social media by storm and this peaked my curiosity in this luscious dessert so here I am giving a review on this Basque cheesecake.

I ordered this with a regular sized Blue Sakura bubble tea ($5.90). This was a pretty mini Basque cheesecake and here is a photo for reference:

The final verdict

Overall, I found this cheesecake a bit overwhelming. I think it was a very lovely concept but personally not to my taste. The burnt taste was a bit annoying after the 5th bite or so, and I was tempted to peel off this top layer. The filling of this cheesecake was absolutely divine: silky smooth, creamy and airy are the best way to describe it. I think this would be a cute gift to give to your friend who you just had an argument with.
